Student scientific circle in the laboratories of the ECM Research Institute

One of the main activities of the Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine (ECI Research Institute) is to provide staff of the Bogomolets NMU and young scientists with consulting assistance in planning scientific activities taking into account the most relevant areas of medicine, biology and modern experimental laboratory base of NMU.

Today, on the basis of the laboratories of the ECM Research Institute are performed fragments of scientific works of more than 17 departmental teams, including 3 full-time graduate students, 2 master’s degree seekers and young scientists – students.

Members of the student scientific circle of the Department of Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry (Head of the Department Prof. LV Gaiova) take an active part in conducting the scientific experiment in the ECM Research Institute. The close interaction of the ECM Research Institute with the department is also due to the fact, that the ECM Research Institute is a base for teaching the elective course “Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics” for students of the 5th and 6th year. Students analyze theoretical material in the form of interactive lectures and get acquainted with the work of laboratories in the independent performance of diagnostic tests.

And for junior students, acquaintance with the activities of the ECM Research Institute is in the form of scientific research observation. The course of the experimental part is of the greatest interest to them. Thus, the group members visit the vivarium, observe the progress of the model, observe the formation of a control group of intact (healthy) rats, which are kept in similar conditions, carefully delve into the principle of animal’s division into groups.

At all stages of work we actively involve our students. This approach provides an opportunity to increase their level of research skills and knowledge, interest in science, to cultivate respect for methodological research.

ECM Research Institute – as a real base for student science

One of the main activities of the Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine (ECI Research Institute) is to provide staff of departments of Bogomolets NMU and young scientists with consulting assistance in planning scientific activities, taking into account the most relevant areas of medicine, biology and modern experimental laboratory base of NMU.

Today, on the basis of the laboratories of the ECM Research Institute are performed fragments of scientific works of more than 17 departmental teams, including 3 full-time graduate students, 2 master’s degree seekers and young scientists – students.

Thus, a 4th year student of the Medical Faculty №2 Fomenko Ksenia (supervisor, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Venereology KV Kolyadenko), initiated a study on the impact of exercise on the characteristics of acne in young women. In the study took part her colleagues, students of NMU, volunteers whose progesterone levels were measured before and after a set of physical activities. Ksenia Fomenko organized and conducted the whole research process herself: selection of participants, control of their health, exercise program in the form of fitness training, etc. Irina Solonko, a junior researcher in the ECM Research Institute, performed direct measurements of serum hormone levels by solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), but Ksenia carefully observed the process and became fully acquainted with the method. The results of the research with analysis and discussion will be presented by the 4th year student of Bogomolets NMU at the All-Ukrainian competition of student research works in natural, technical and human sciences. We wish Ksenia success and we are sure, that she will be able to present such results of her own research on the basis of the ECM Research Institute and answer all methodological questions perfectly.

For the purpose of professional orientation of schoolchildren, popularization of scientific researches and interest in higher medical education, on the initiative of the department of bioorganic and biological chemistry (head of the department prof. LV Gaiova) and the management of the Ukrainian medical lyceum of Bogomolets NMU an excursion for 9th grades of lyceum and 9th and 10th grades of medical gymnasium № 33 was conducted in the Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of Bogomolets NMU.

Employees of the institute, who are part-time teachers of the department, showed students experimental and diagnostic laboratories, popularly and clearly informed about the scientific capabilities of the research institute, research and measurement methods. The conversation took place in the form of active interaction and the children were happy to maintain a dialogue, express their opinions.

It was very unexpected for young visitors to see the process of tissue fixation in paraffin blocks, making histological sections using a microtome in a cryostat for pathomorphological studies. Significant admiration was shown by observing the operation of the electron microscope. The young men saw, that in order to magnify the image by 15-20 thousand times, the material needed a different fixation in special resins in capsules, placement on thin micro grids.

During getting acquainted with the clinical laboratory diagnostics, the students observed the operation of the centrifuge, saw how the blood divides into layers and were able to examine blood cells under a microscope. And some young researchers have tried to work with modern dispensers, automatic hematology analyzers and blood collection systems to study hemostasis.

The lyceum students were especially impressed by the laboratory of molecular biological research. They gladly listened to the story about the possibilities of modern genetics, its clinical significance for the patient. They were impressed that in Bogomolets NMU such scientific horizons are already real and open to young scientists.

Most of the visitors assured the staff of the ECM Research Institute, that this excursion made their professional choice in medicine even more conscious and they will make every effort to enter our medical university!

On October 28th in 2016, within the framework of the International Conference of Young Scientists 2016 were held 11 master classes in various fields of medicine:

The master class “PCR Technique” was organized by the Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of Bogomolets NMU. The scientific supervisor of the master class was the director of the research institute, professor Larisa Natrus. Number of MK students: 19 students. During the event, participants had a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge of one of the most modern, most accurate methods of laboratory research – polymerase chain reaction. More importantly, after the introductory lecture, students were able to deepen their skills in this technique: they prepared DNA and performed quantitative PCR in real time. At the end of the MC, the participants were explained how to analyze the results of the study.
