The flag is a symbol of statehood of Ukraine
The flag was hoisted over the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for the first time on 24 August, 1991.
The Act of Independence of the country was declared that day.
The history of this blue-yellow flag, which celebrates the Day of State Flag of Ukraine, is very old. These colors have always been present on the Ukrainian state flags of different ages since the time of the baptism of Rus.
Blue colour on the flag of Ukraine means peaceful sky and yellow – wheat fields.
Earlier, National Flag Day was celebrated only in Kiev at the municipal level. The capital celebrated this holiday on July 24th. It was on this day in 1990, the blue-yellow flag was raised over the Kyiv mayor’s office.
On August 23, 1991 a group of members of Parliament brought blue and yellow Ukrainian flag in the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada.
Blessing of the National Flag was carried out by the priest of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Petro Boyko.
President of Ukraine signed a decree “On the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine” under #987/2004, the corresponding picture was written on the wall of the Verkhovna Rada, and this flag, as a relic, is solemnly kept under glass in a museum of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The next day Ukraine declared independence.
On September 18, 1991 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine actually provided the blue-yellow bicolor status of the official flag of the country by its decree “On the flag of Ukraine”. From that day under this flag has begun to meet foreign visitors, servicemen has been taken an oath, the Embassy of Ukraine has been working and it was posted at the UN.
On January 28, 1992 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution “On the approval of the state flag of Ukraine the National flag (although then operated the old Constitution, where state symbols were described as former USSR). It states: State Flag of Ukraine “is a rectangular cloth consisting of two horizontal stripes of equal width: top – blue, bottom – yellow, with a ratio of the flag’s width to its length is 2: 3”.
Holiday was established in Ukraine “… In honor of the long history of the Ukrainian state, state symbols of independent Ukraine and on the purpose to educate citizens to respect state symbols of Ukraine …” according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Day of State Flag Day of Ukraine” dated August 23, 2004 under # 987/2004.
An annual official ceremony of raising the national flag all across the Ukraine on August 23 was established in 2009.
