HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURAL MEMORIAL OF THE XX CENTURY – BUILDING FOR MEDICAL DIVISION OF HIGHER WOMEN’S COURSES IN MECHNYKOV STREET, 5

The solemn opening of the new educational establishment in the city – medical division of Higher women’s courses took place on 23, September, 1907 in the meeting hall of Kyiv city duma (the building has not been preserved, it was located in the modern Maydan Nezalezhnosti. In 1916 the division was reorganized into Women’s medical institute. And now one of the oldest departments at O.O. Bohomolets National medical university – department of pathological anatomy No 1 and department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy is located in the building.

Three storey building in Mechnykov street, 5 was erected under the project of military engineer Pavlo Golubiatnykov. He showed himself as a brilliant architect – the building for medical division of Higher women’s courses was erected namely due to his own project. Now the building in Mechnykov street, 5 is occupied by two departments of O.O. Bohomolets National medical university – one of the oldest – department of pathological anatomy No 1 and department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy.

The building was erected in brick style with the features of neo-classicism. It was built in 1908 at the expenses of funds that were collected for two years from attendants of women’s division as a payment for study, as well as for donations from patrons and money of pedagogical collective, which members refused from salary in favor of financing the construction. The building was erected at 110 thousands Karbovanets.

Since 1909 in this building on the third floor there was the department of normal anatomy and a large hall, on the second floor – the premises of department of operative surgery and histology, a hall for practical classes in histology, on the first floor – departments of general pathology and pathological anatomy, in the semi-basement – laboratory for works in general pathology, premises for animals that were used for scientific experiments, mortuary of Oleksandrivska hospital, chapel, rooms for staff, engine room for heating and ventilation.

Since 1917 until 1923 in building in Mechnykov street, 5 there were the departments of normal anatomy, operative surgery, forensic medicine, city forensic medical mortuary, and forensic ambulatories. The classrooms were used due to their primary purpose. The classes with students from the Second Kyiv medical institute, legal faculty of Kyiv university were also performed on the base of department of forensic medicine. The doctors-students of Institute of improvement of doctors also passed through specialization and improvement on the base of this department.

Here were the museums of departments of normal anatomy, forensic medicine, operative surgery. Each of these departments had the large scientific library.

Since the end of 1960-ies the department of pathological anatomy of Kyiv state medical institute was located in the building.

In 1954 the department of normal anatomy was transferred to the new building in Brest-Lytovskyy Avenue (now Peremogy Avenue, 34).

The following scientists, doctors, public leaders worked here during different times:

Briuno Georgiy Georgiyovych (1862— 1919) — gynecologist, head at obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Kyiv university (1913-19), professor in medical division of HWC.
Vysokovych Volodymyr Kostiantynovych (1854—1912) — pathological anatomist, head at department of pathological anatomy in Kyiv university and medical division of HWC. (1895—1912).
Votchal Yevgen Pylypovych (1864—1936) — botanist, academician in AUAS (since 1921), professor at medical division of HWC
Ivakin Oleksii Andriyovych (1893—1941) — anatomist, head at department of normal anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1924—30).

Ivanytskyy Grygoriy Semenovych (1867—1940) — surgeon, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1922—28).
Kallistov Ivan Pavlovych (1897— 1963) — surgeon, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1957—63).
Kysylyova Oleksandra Pylypivna (1918-95) – pathological anatomist, head at department of pathological anatomy (1971—91), pro-rector on educational work (1960—67) at Kyiv state medical institute, honorary scientist of UkrSSR (since 1981)

Konstantynovych Volodymyr Mykolayovych (1872—1920) — pathological anatomist, head at department of pathological anatomy at Kyiv university (1913-20), professor at medical division of HWC
Kulchytskyy Kostiantyn Ivanovych (1922—1997) — surgeon, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1963—94), honorary scientist of UkrSSR (since 1981), laureate of State Prize of UkrSSR (1983), O. Bohomolets Prize from AS of UkrSSR (1986).
Lapynskyy Mykhaylo Mykytovych (1862—1926) — psychiatrist, head at department of neurology and psychiatry at Kyiv university (1903—18), professor at medical division of HWC
Levytskyy Mykhaylo Andriyovych (1871—1942) — ophthalmologist, head at department of eye diseases (1922—41), dean of therapeutic faculty (1922—25), pro-rector in Kyiv state medical institute (1926— 30), professor at medical division of HWC

Malkov Grygoriy Mytrofanovych (1869—?) — therapeutist, head at department of separate pathology and therapy at Kyiv university (1905—19).
Morozov Pavlo Ivanovych (1846— 1927) — surgeon, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at Kyiv university and Kyiv state medical institute (1886—1910, 1917—22), pro-rector in Kyiv university (1906—10), director in Kyiv women’s medical institute (1916—20), pro-rector in Kyiv state medical academy (1921).
Muratov Oleksandr Oleksandrovych (1850—1918) — gynecologist, head at department of obstetrics and gynecology at Kyiv university (1900— 13), professor at medical division of HWC
Nechay Pavlo Ivanovych (1859—?) — psychiatrist, professor at medical division of HWC and department of psychiatry at Kyiv state medical institute (1920—24).
Novytskyy Sofroniy Terentiyovych (1892—1957) — surgeon, professor, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy (1945—57), dean of therapeutical faculty at Kyiv state medical institute (1948—54).
Obolonskyy Mykola Oleksandrovych (1856—1913) — forensic scientist, head at department of forensic medicine (1889—1913) and dean of medical faculty at Kyiv university (1902— 13), professor at medical division of HWC
Orlov Volodymyr Dmytrovych (1856— 1919) — hygienist, head at department of hygiene at Kyiv university (1893—1914) , professor at medical division of HWC
Radziievskyy Oleksii Grygorovych (1864—1935) — surgeon, professor at medical division of HWC and Kyiv women’s medical institute (1907— 19), head at department of hospital surgery at Kyiv state medical institute (1920—32).
Sadoven Oleksii Andriyovych (1857—1918) — biochemist, head at department of biochemistry (1889—1919) and dean of medical faculty in Kyiv university (1914—19), professor at medical division of HWC
Sapozhnykov Yuriy Serhiyovych (1897— 1970) — forensic scientist, head at department of forensic medicine (1936—70), dean of therapeutic faculty at Kyiv state medical institute (1936—40, 1947—48). Chief forensic scientist of UkrSSR (1937—54).
Svyrydov Oleksandr Ivanovych (1900— 73) — anatomist, professor at department of normal anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute. Author of original theory about primary origin of lymphatic system at spinals.

Spirov Mykhaylo Serhiyovych (1892— 1973) — anatomist, head at department of normal anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1930— 71), honorary scientist of UkrSSR (since 1943).
Strazhesko Mykola Dmytrovych (1876— 1952) — therapeutist, professor at medical division of HWC (since 1910), head at department of therapeutic diagnostics (1917—18, 1922—27), hospital therapeutic clinic (1927—37) at Kyiv state medical institute, director in faculty therapeutic clinic (1929—52).
Studzynskyy Ivan Vikentiyovych (1887—1964) — surgeon, head at department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1930—41).
Sushko Oleksandr Ovksentiyovych (1899—1978) — anatomist, director in Kyiv dental institute (1946—51), assistant professor at department of normal anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1951—71), deputy director of institute on academic part. He found the “valves-gates” in vessels of internal organs. His specimens were widely used in atlases in anatomy.
Tytov Ivan Trokhymovych (1875—?) — pathological anatomist, head at department of pathological anatomy and histology at Kyiv women’s medical institute (1913—20), head at department of pathological anatomy at Kyiv state medical institute (1920—22), chairman in its scientific council.
Tomashevskyy Serhii Petrovych (1854-1916) – dermatovenerologist, head at department of dermatovenereology at Kyiv university (1899—1916), director in medical division of HWC Kyiv women’s institute, established on their base at his initiative (1909— 16), founder and chairman in syphilology and dermatovenereology societies at Kyiv university (1900—16).
Trzhetseskyy Anton Antonovych (?—?) — pharmacologist, head at department of pharmacology at Kyiv university and Kyiv state medical institute (1909—22), professor at medical division of HWC
Tritshel Karl Genrikhovych (1842—1914) — therapeutist, head at department of separate pathology and therapy with hospital clinic at Kyiv university (1878—1903), professor at medical division of HWC
Chayka Yevgen Ivanovych (1902—76) — pathological anatomist, head at department of pathological anatomy (1941—70), pro-rector on academic and scientific work at Kyiv state medical institute (1943—58), honorary scientist of UkrSSR (since 1955). He started working in this building in 1927 as a prosector in city hospital; in 1932 he became the head of central laboratory and dissecting room of hospital, which were located in this building.
Chernov Vasyl Yegorovych (1852—1914) — pediatrician, head at department of pediatrics at Kyiv university (1889—1915) , professor at medical division of HWC
Shymanovskyy Oleksandr Fedorovych (1860—1918) — ophthalmologist, head at department of eye diseases at Kyiv university (1903—18), professor at medical division of HWC

Now the building is occupied by two department of O.O. Bohomolets National medical university: department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy and department of pathological anatomy No 1. In the building there is also the mortuary of Central city clinical hospital.
