MASTER-CLASS “COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS – ACHILLES HEEL OF DOCTOR-PEDIATRICIAN”

On 28, March, 2018 they performed the master class for University students on topic “Communication with parents – Achilles heel of doctor-pediatrician”. The master class was organized and performed by professor Oksana Vyhovska, dean at medical faculty No 3, practicing pediatrician-infectiologist with working experience for many years. The communicative competences of doctor play the special role in pediatrics as the responsibility for optimal full value development of personality since birth and until 18 years is imposed on children’s doctor first of all that is the whole period in formation of child’s personality takes place in full view of doctor-pediatrician. The peculiarity of professional competency at doctor-pediatrician is that he has not only to diagnose and to treat the diseases but first of all to prevent from its origin at early stages. This master class is one from events in the series of trainings, master-classes in this topic, prepared and performed by moderator for students, first of all, pediatric students and doctors-interns.

Professor Oksana Vyhovska in the first part of master class acquainted all participants with peculiarity and uniqueness of pediatric communication, which is in its difficulty as not a doctor but a child, parents and relatives act in it. She paid the special attention to the fact that now the empathy in relation to a child, parents, colleagues, drilled competence of correct and right communication, professionalism acts in the first place in efficient communication in pediatrics. The moderator in details fixed on those peculiarities of our days that complicate the correct compliance both on the part of a child, parents, relatives and doctor. She in details analyzed the psychological types of parents and accentuated the attention to peculiarities for formation of their parental competency and efficient communication on the part of doctor-pediatrician. The second part of master class included the business game. All participants were divided into groups, in which each of them represented a doctor, parents, a child, someone of relatives. The difficulty was that the children were of different age, with different complaints or situations and the parents of children represented different psychological types. The participants in master-class had to act in a certain role, to perform the communication and to present its result to other participants in master-class. As the results from work in groups with the task to achieve the efficient communication showed, not all managed to do it and it turned out to be difficult.

The audience was represented by students from the first to the sixth course in medical faculty No 3. It was interesting that the students of junior and senior courses at discussions in the first part of the master-class imagined the successful communication in pediatrics by a different way. At the end, after business game all came to the uniform conclusion that the acquisition of competency for efficient communication in practice of future doctor-pediatrician requires the constant professional communication, experience, time and many other components and is the complex and long process. After participation in work of master-class all participants received the certificates, tasks for the next master class and approaching to the dreamt occupation.
