THE INTERDISCIPLINARY MEETING OF STUDENTS’ SCIENTIFIC CLUBS AT DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY AND INTERNAL MEDICINE NO 1

The joint meeting of students’ scientific clubs at department of neurology (head – professor L.I. Sokolova) and of internal medicine No 1 (head – professor V.L. Shypulin) at O.O. Bogomolets NMU, devoted to detailed consideration of etiopathogenetic aspects, clinical diagnostics criteria and modern standards of treatment for two kinds of encephalopathy – hepatic and Gaye-Wernicke’s encephalopathy, was held on 14, March, 2018 on the base of KCCH No 18.

The head at department of internal medicine No 1 V.P. Shypulin in his introductory speech paid attention of present people to urgency and interdisciplinary character in problem of somatogenetic pathology at brain. Vadym Petrovych also mentioned that this meeting took place at the establishment, where the meetings of Clinical Society for Medical Students of Saint Volodymyr University were launched in 1881 at the initiative of professor F. Mering. The first club members at the establishment of the society were students O.A. Kysil, F.H. Yanovskyi and Ye.H. Cherniakhivskyi. Respecting the old traditions, the department of internal medicine No 1 supported the proposal by head at department of neurology L.I. Sokolova about performance of joint meeting for clubs under this topic.

The first report was made by student of the 5th course in medical faculty No 4 Ivan Varnakov. The monitor in students’ scientific club at department of neurology in his report described the modern notions about predictors and pathogenetic mechanisms for development of Wernicke’s encephalopathy. Characterizing the range of clinical manifestations of disease, the reporter presented the video materials that demonstrate the oculogyric and coordination disorders at such patients, as well as the pathognomonic features in MRT images of the brain. The main accent was made to algorithm for diagnostics and treatment of Wernicke’s encephalopathy according to modern international directives.

The report on topic “Hepatic encephalopathy. Past and present” was presented by student of the 6th course in medical faculty No 1 Oleksandr Ponomariov. Defining the problem of dysmetabolic encephalopathy, the member in SSC at department of internal medicine No 1 performed the retrospective analysis on progress of disease at American writer William Sidney Porter (O’Henry, who suffered from diabetes mellitus, cirrhosis of the liver and hepatic encephalopathy that caused to death of the writer at the age of 47 years. The reporter fixed on achievements of modern medicine in management of patients with hepatic encephalopathy at the background of hepatic cirrhosis, possibilities for improvement in quality and prolongation of life for such patients.

Both reports caused to interest at audience. The students from different courses and representatives of departments took part in lively discussion with questions to reporters and the head at department of internal medicine No 1, professor V.P. Shypulin, assistant professors at department V.V. Cherniavskyi, L.S. Hvozdetska, senior laboratory assistant O.O. Shumeiko shared with their own reflections. The assistant professors at department of neurology T.A. Dovbonos, K.V. Antonenko, H.H. Symonenko, and assistant H.S. Trepet joined to discussion. The participants emphasized that the performance of joint meeting in urgent problem of somatoneurology demonstrated the efficiency in such form of scientific students’ meetings not only in deepening the knowledge in different spheres of medical science but development of general clinical thinking of future doctors. As the main reporters at the meeting were students, this changed the passive role of club members and assisted to their active involvement into process of cognition and formation of scientific world outlook.
