OPENING OF THE BIORESOURCE CENTER OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MICROBIOLOGY AT NMU

13.06.2017

Despite the existence of the modern technology for communication and dissemination of information in the academic environment, yet there is a problem of limited exchange of scientific knowledge. The pledge to gain knowledge and execute research projects effective is to have access to cutting-edge information sources (peer-reviewed journals, textbooks, etc.), as well as the ability to conduct group discussions among experts in a particular field: the work in the scientific hubs or co-working. This approach is supported by the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) through the creation of BioResource Centers in the field of Microbiology and related sciences around the world, including Ukraine.

Such a BioResource Center was opened at Bogomolets National Medical University on June 9, 2017. Through the creation of BioResource Center, ASM provides free online access to state-of-the-art English-language journals, which highlights the modern information on microbiology, infectious diseases, diagnostic tools, as well as paper and on-line versions of the latest editions of books from the above mentioned disciplines. At the opening ceremony of the BioResource Center were present Galina Mukhina, Program Consultant of the ASM, and Marianna Azarskova, Laboratory Advisor of the Division of Global HIV and TB U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also, the event was attended by Vice-Rector for International Relations, Research and Education, Professor Olesia Lynovytska, Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Tetiana Cherenko, Head of Department for Research Andrii Dinets, Dean of the Medical Faculty No. 3, Professor of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Oksana Vyhovska, Head of the University Library Liudmyla Matiukhina, Deputy Head of the University Library Larysa Medianyk, Head of the Department for International Cooperation Hanna Malunova and senior laboratory assistant of the Department of Pediatrics No. 4 Arkadii Vodianyk.

In the context of the event, Galina Mukhina, representative of the American Society of Microbiology, told about the options of the web-site and described the real prospects for further cooperation between the NMU and ASM. In particular, colleagues from the ASM expressed encouragement for faculty, departments, researchers at NMU to take part in ASM scientific projects, that will be contiguous to the AIDS theme.

BioResource Center of ASM is informational, educational and research platform on which scientists, tutors and students have the opportunity to not only enjoy the latest scientific publications in Microbiology and related spheres, but also to share knowledge and ideas, to conduct alternative training sessions, seminars, discussions, integrating in a strong scientific community of co-working.

BioResource Center of ASM is located in the Reading Room No. 2 of the NMU Library (Peremogy Avenue, 34), which has kindly provided premises for it. However, free access to periodicals and books of ASM is available on all computers on the University LAN (Peremogy Avenue, 34) at https://www.asm.org/.

ASM representatives emphasized that the number and frequency of use of specified resource, by the students and faculty of NMU, depends on whether the University will be granted free access to informational resources of the ASM in the next year.
