Head of the Department of Oncology, Bogomolets National Medical University
Anton Anatoliyovych Burlaka, Doctor of Medical Sciences
The Department of Oncology at Bogomolets National Medical University is one of the university’s leading educational and research departments, providing training and postgraduate education for doctors in accordance with modern standards of oncological care. The department has a strong clinical base in Kyiv and combines educational, scientific, and medical-consultative activities aimed at improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.
The development of the Department of Oncology at Bogomolets National Medical University is inextricably linked to the establishment of specialized oncology services in Kyiv and Ukraine as a whole. The historical basis for its formation was the activity of the Kyiv X-ray Radiological Oncology Institute, which was later reorganized into the Research Institute of Radiology and Oncology, and since 2008 has been operating as the National Cancer Institute. In July 1974, the Department of Oncology of the Kyiv Medical Institute was established at the clinical base of this institution. Since 1988, the main clinical base of the department has been the Kyiv City Oncology Dispensary, located in Striletska Lane. After the opening of the Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center in 1990, the department continued its activities at its base, which expanded the possibilities for educational, scientific, and medical-consultative work.
The further growth of cancer incidence in Ukraine since the early 2000s, as well as the development of oncological science and practice, contributed to a significant expansion of the department’s clinical bases, an increase in staff, and an intensification of educational and scientific-practical activities. Since 2025, the Department of Oncology has been operating at five leading oncology clinical bases in Kyiv, providing ample opportunities for training students, interns, and postgraduate students, as well as for the implementation of modern standards of diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.
In 2026, the Department of Oncology at Bogomolets National Medical University was headed by Anton Anatoliyovych Burlaka, MD, PhD, associate professor, and surgical oncologist.
