Due to curriculum for 2005 in wording for 2007 the study of academic discipline “surgery”, as a single academic discipline unlike four academic disciplines (faculty, hospital surgery, surgical diseases, pediatric surgery) provides with implementation of principle on open-ended teaching that assists to quality in training of students.

The abovementioned program is based on students’ learning the morphological disciplines – human anatomy, histology, cytology, embryology, physiology, pathomorphology, pathophysiology, clinical disciplines – general surgery (with operative surgery and topographic anatomy), propedeutics of internal medicine, propedeutics of pediatrics, radiology of pharmacology and is integrated with those disciplines. The curriculum establishes the massif of knowledge in surgery by students, including pediatric surgery, anticipates the integration of teaching with traumatology and orthopedics, neurosurgery, anesthesiology and intensive therapy, urinology, obstetrics and gynecology and other academic disciplines, where surgical methods of treatment are applied, as well as other clinical disciplines – therapy, endocrinology, functional diagnostics, etc. and forms the skills to apply knowledge during professional activity at the level of doctor of general profile. It enables acquiring practical skills and forming professional skills for diagnostics and rendering medical aid at certain pathological states in clinic of surgical diseases.

The organization of academic process is carried out due to credit modular system according to requirements of Bologna process. The credit modular system anticipates the rotation of modules for clinical disciplines and gradual study at one department during 4 th, 5 th and 6 th years of study that provides with individual responsibility of department for quality in training of students on discipline “Surgery”.

The purpose for study of surgery is to master theoretical and practical classes on etiology, pathogenesis, typical and atypical clinical evidences, methods of diagnostics, conservative and operative treatment, rehabilitation of surgical pathology within the limits that correspond to training of doctor of general profile taking into consideration the peculiarities of its specialty.

Thanks to constant study of questions in format A during the 5 th and 6 th courses, in 2005- 2007 in three passes through integrated licensing exam “Krok- 2” the department took the 1 st place among medical higher schools in Ukraine. Each year the average score for pass through exam “Krok- 2” is increased that testifies to positive dynamics in the level of knowledge at students, who studied at our department.

Since 2002 the department is the supportive one for “Surgical diseases” according to the order from MHC of Ukraine No 86, dd. 26.02.2003. Accordingly, the department twice a year performs the methodological meetings with heads of surgical departments in state higher medical schools of Ukraine, developed two typical curricula on “Surgical diseases”, as well as in connection with implementation of principles for Bologna system and transfer to open-end system on teaching surgery in the 4 th, 5 th and 6 th courses at one department, the employees of department in cooperation with specialists from one-field department developed the typical curriculum on discipline “Surgery”, which is based on credit modular principles. Besides, according to the order from Curriculum Office at MHC of Ukraine, the specialists of department developed the typical curricula on elective courses “Plastic and reconstructive surgery”, “Cardiac surgery”, “Vascular surgery”. In connection with the perspective to teach courses and cycles of postgraduate education they developed the curricula on specialization, pre-attestation, theme-based cycles “Plastic and reconstructive surgery”, “Vascular surgery”.

During existence of department, its specialists developed 20 detailed open-end curricula on “Hospital surgery”, “Surgical diseases”, “Surgery”, “Plastic and reconstructive surgery”, “Hepatology”, “Endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery”, “Cardiac surgery”, “Vascular surgery”, “Transplantology”, which are reissued according to the schedule.

According to detailed curricula, the specialists of department developed and use the methodological guidelines in academic process in the total amount of: 124 – on surgery for teachers, 136 – for students (in hard and electronic form); on surgical diseases, per 60 accordingly.

The department compiled, issued and distributed 12 textbooks and study guides on actual issues of modern surgery both in hard and electronic variants among higher medical schools of Ukraine. The department of surgery No 1 in Dnipropetrovsk medical academy (professor Bereznytskyy Ya.S.) together with department of surgery No 1 in Bogomolets NMU (professor Zakharash M.P.) published the textbook “Surgery” for students and interns, approved by MHC of Ukraine as a basic textbook for higher medical schools of III-IV accreditation levels.

Students-members in the club at our department from previous years have already graduated from university, become the real specialists, most of them continue being engaged into scientific activity. So, former monitors in the club Kopchak Kostiantyn Volodymyrovych – Candidate of Medicine, experienced surgeon; Rybinkina Iryna – works as a doctor in Great Britain; Dinets Andriy – studies in Sweden; members in the club Bulatova Yuliia – works in the United States of America, Voloshyna Olena – cardiac surgeon, defends the candidate’s dissertation, Unukovych Dmytro – defended the dissertation in Sweden and continues working in Caroline University. It is necessary to mentioned about such pleasant peculiarity as most members in the club continue keeping contacts with department till now, already after graduation from university.

The employees took part in postgraduate education, in particular doctor-interns due to specialty “surgery”. Under supervision of curators and on their own the future specialists acquire the theoretical and practical skills, obtain the skills of work with patient in manipulation, operating rooms, take part in rounds of professors, are on duty at ambulance. During 15 years the department trained 100 doctors-interns, 13 clinical residents, 6 postgraduate students, 7 masters. The quality in training of doctors-interns is confirmed by their further destiny (all graduates pass through exams from the first time; work at deserving posts, including abroad).
