4th CANADIAN-UKRAINIAN MISSION TO ASSIST VICTIMS ON THE MAIDAN AND EAST OF UKRAINE (February 20-26, 2016)

V.O.Malanchuk, R.S.Palivoda

Boryspil Airport recently left the plane with a team of 22 members of the 4th Canadian mission, including maxillofacial and plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, rehabilitators and physiotherapists, junior medical staff, coordinators and co-organizers of the Canadian mission. Ukrainian Foundation.

It is symbolic that this year the large Western Diaspora is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the resettlement of the first Ukrainians to Canada. Nevertheless, for most of them, Ukraine was and remains the second home where the youth was spent, the parents rested, and the roots of the family tree continue. Clear organization, calmness and coherence were observed in the work of the team of Canadian doctors. Apparently, only the language barrier was a minor obstacle, but it was also leveled by joint efforts.

Canadian doctors represent the country’s leading medical institutions, including the hospitals of Sunnybrook (Toronto) and Hamilton (Ontario), and their high professionalism and rich practical experience are undeniable.

The organization of the team’s work included preoperative examination of all patients who had signed up in advance. The consultation announced the day before on social networks and online publications was carried out jointly with Roman Fischuk, a citizen of Ukraine, together with the National Military Clinical Hospital and Mission Coordinator, Master of Health Management.

Clinical examination-consultation of patients on February 20 and 21, 2016 consisted of two areas: examination of the maxillofacial area and examination of the upper extremities. Each of the patients was measured blood pressure, heart rate, collected complaints and medical history, filled out the developed form. Thus, each patient received an individual number, according to which the information base was formed, the plan of surgical interventions depending on the complexity and volume, the need to make fixing or protective thermoplastic splints, tires, training with a physiotherapist.

From February 22 to 26, 2016, a daily team of Canadian physicians together with Ukrainian doctors performed operations in the abdominal surgery department of the National Military Clinical Center “GVKG”. Forty patients were operated on for reconstructive and restorative interventions on the bones of the facial and cerebral skull, aesthetic and cosmetic operations (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, removal of scarring, etc.), operations on the hand, its joints, tendons, nerve transplantation, local plastic surgery.

Impressive physical endurance of Canadian colleagues with daily 9-10 hours of intense concentrated work in the operating room and department. By the way, taking care of their own ergonomics and comfort, each member of the Canadian team had sports shoes, most of them have long been involved in various sports, enjoy active recreation (plastic surgeon Mark was professionally engaged in hockey, nurse Lisa – kayaking). And another of their secrets is an incredibly positive and friendly mood both in communication with patients and colleagues.

President of UACMFS, prof. V.O. Malanchuk with prof. O. Antonishin (Canada) during operations in a military hospital, February 26, 2016

Postgraduate student of the department, volunteer of the mission R.S.Palivoda together with prof. O. Antonishin

We sincerely believe that such a Canadian-Ukrainian action will remain a good tradition in the future. We hope that the approval of the management, the grateful feedback from the patients, as well as the warm professional and personal relations will give impetus to the new fifth mission.

We express our heartfelt gratitude from the leadership and members of the Ukrainian Association of Cranial and Maxillofacial Surgeons to a powerful team of Canadian doctors for their volunteer support, professionalism, unique experience both clinically and socially, irresistible desire and sincerity to help and rehabilitate victims.

Cooperation with Belarusian colleagues began in 1994, when Professor OP Chudakov (Minsk) was elected a member of the Council of the European Association of Craniofacial Surgeons at the Congress in The Hague. Later there were meetings at foreign and domestic scientific forums, exchange of reviews and responses to scientific papers, dissertation research, a large number of publications.

In December 2013, prof. V.O. Malanchuk was invited to give lectures to students of VSMU on the topic: “Modern views on the problem of osteomyelitis of the jaws”, which highlights the scientific developments of the department in the study of osteomyelitis of the maxillofacial area, in particular its toxic form. Also, Belarusian colleagues expressed interest in the pedagogical experience of the dental faculty of NMU, some aspects of which were presented in the lecture “Development of professional competence of future doctors” (Assoc. Prof. Ya.A.Kulbashna).

By mutual consent, cooperation will only deepen.
