International cooperation

The department of social medicine and health care keeps the close international contacts with many foreign scientific educational establishments in Europe and all over the world, international organizations, including:

The employees of department took part in numerous events on issues of health care at European and world level, including:

  • Symposium of WHO ROE “National experience in negative tendencies, which influence on human resources” (Lisbon, Portugal, 2007);
  • Educational tour of WHO ROE on issues of training medical students on the base of Copenhagen University (Denmark, 2007) and Lund University (Sweden, 2007);
  • Meeting on accreditation of academic programs on issues of public health in Europe at Copenhagen University (Denmark, 2007);
  • Meeting within strategic partnership of WHO and VPME “Requirements to training in medical education (Moscow, RF, 2007);
  • European Ministerial Conference of WHO “Health care systems – health – wealth” (Tallinn, Estonia, 2008);

The head at department, academician of NAMS of Ukraine, professor Moskalenko V.F. was working as a member of official delegation of Ukraine at the 58th session of WHO European regional committee (2008), where he made the speech

The employees of department within cooperation with WHO ROE and CDC coordinate the fulfillment of international research on study of smoking prevalence among students of higher medical schools in Ukraine. The important stage in the plan on improvement of level of knowledge and skills of students, future specialists in health care, on issues of smoking prevention and rendering aid in its refusal became the development of the new educational course on problems of tobacco control. The meeting of Round table “Establishment and implementation of academic course for students at higher medical schools “Tobacco control” was held after reviewing the new development and its approbation on 21.10.2009.

The organizers of event were Bogomolets National medical university, WHO Bureau in Ukraine, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA, Atlanta).

The representatives from Ministry of health care of Ukraine, Ministry of education and science of Ukraine, National council on issues of health care at President of Ukraine, leading specialists in the sphere of public health that represent the scientific centers, higher medical schools and higher schools of not medical profile, executives and employees in health centers, students, young scientists, representatives of mass media, etc. took part in the work of forum.

The main purpose of the Round table was the presentation and discussion of academic course “Tobacco control” that consists of 6 lectures on the most important aspects of smoking, for solution of issues on its further implementation into study program for students at higher medical schools.

The program of the Round table included a number of program reports and speeches by leading specialists in the sphere of health care, medical science and medical education.

The meeting was opened by the First Deputy Minister of health care of Ukraine, professor Lazoryshynets V.V. He pointed out to the importance and significance of issues on struggle against tobacco for health of population, described the strategy on activity of Ministry of health care of Ukraine on formation of health lifestyle and prevention of diseases, emphasized the necessity in deep study of problems on tobacco smoking at training specialists in health care and expressed the hope for success of the Round table and development of reasonable solutions due to results from its performance.

The rector of Bogomolets NMU, corresponding member in AMS of Ukraine, professor Moskalenko V.F. in his speech characterized the activity of leading higher medical school in the country in relation to the struggle against smoking, its educational, scientific and educative aspects. In addition to regulatory provisions, which regulate the rules of conduct in academic buildings and hostels of university, they described the initiative work of teachers and students on prevention of tobacco smoking. The issues on struggle against tobacco are the subject of discussion at numerous scientific forums, which are held at the establishment, including at traditional international scientific practical conferences, seminars, etc. The students’ core group runs the powerful informative educational activity on issues of tobacco control at patronized institutions, including at specialized children’s institutions, boarding schools and general education schools. Teachers and students of the university are constant participants in national and city events, devoted to struggle against smoking and propagation of healthy lifestyle, in particular actions to World Day without tobacco, races, etc. The specialists of NMU successfully work over scientific problems, related to consumption of tobacco that is reflected in many scientific publications in Ukraine and abroad. One of the important steps in system work, directed to overcome with the tobacco epidemic, is the development of educational course “Tobacco control” by scientists of the establishment for implementation into higher medical schools.

The report “Methodological approaches to establishment and implementation of academic course for students at higher medical schools “Tobacco control” was presented on behalf of authors, employees in laboratory on strategic researches in health care at Bogomolets NMU.

The report presented the scale for smoking prevalence among medical students, characteristics of their smoking status, their assessment of knowledge on issues of prevention from tobacco smoking and rendering the aid in refusal from this bad habit, received during study, needs in obtaining the knowledge on different aspects in struggle against tobacco. The special attention was paid to the methodology on development of the new lecture course, filling some topics with content, technology on description of scientific provisions, etc. The report characterized all prepared lectures on different problems of smoking, including toxicological, clinical, medical social, legal, economic, preventive ones and rendering aid in refusal from smoking. They demonstrated all multimedia presentations of lectures, which design covered the introductory part, including urgency, purpose, plan, statement of the main material due to topic of lecture, conclusions, list of recommended literature. The report caused to a great interest that is confirmed by a large number of questions and speeches by participants in the meeting.

18 participants took part in discussion of presented reports, including councilor of Minister of education and science of Ukraine Kulibaba V.D., deputy chairman in National council on issues of public health care at President of Ukraine, head at department of management of public health care in National academy of management at President of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, professor Solonenko I.M. The speech by head at department in Ukrainian institute of strategic researches at MHC of Ukraine, Candidate of Medicine, who was engaged into solution of problems on tobacco smoking in Ukraine for many years, was very interesting. The participants in the meeting with great attention listened to the comments and proposals from deputy director on scientific activity in O.M. Marzeyev Institute of hygiene and medical ecology at AMS of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, professor Polka N.S., prorector in Kharkiv national medical university, Doctor of Medicine, professor Letik I.V., chief doctor in Kyiv city health center, Candidate of Medicine Stoyka O.O., employee in Ukrainian monitoring center on alcohol and drugs at MHC of Ukraine, Candidate of Medicine Spyrydonov V.K. The heads at department in Bogomolets NMU, Doctor of Medicine, professor Svintsitskyy A.S., Doctor of Medicine, professor Ledoshchuk B.O., as well as representatives from council of young scientists at Bogomolets NMU, Candidate of Medicine Korolenko V.V., Moroz V.V., students Prystupiuk L.A., Karpenko G.V. etc. took part in discussion.

The participants had the unanimous opinion about urgency, timeliness and significance of performed work. The speakers highly appreciated the developed course, expressed the necessity in its implementation into academic activity of higher medical schools as soon as possible and adaptation for implementation into other higher schools of not medical profile, presentation for a wide acquaintance in the internet, etc. These and other conclusions and proposals were reflected in resolution by the Round table, which was unanimously adopted by participants in the meeting.

The main provisions of resolution concerned the positive assessment of academic course for students at higher medical schools “Tobacco control”, recommendations for its implementation into academic program for higher medical schools in Ukraine and development of technology on its modular use. They took the decision to develop the clear logistic system for implementation of academic course into higher medical schools in Ukraine taking into consideration the feedback for assessment of its efficiency, to include the issue on mastering practical skills on consulting patients for prevention and refusal from smoking into academic course.

The resolution of the round table reflected the provisions about expediency in support for initiative from representatives of MES of Ukraine and scientific establishments of AMS of Ukraine, establishments of practical health care in relation to cooperation in preparation of educational programs on tobacco control for higher schools of Ukraine and general education schools within interbranch working groups with inclusion of specialists from different associated specialties into it, as well as about necessity to continue the scientific researches on monitoring for prevalence of tobacco smoking among students at higher medical schools in different regions of Ukraine.

The participants in the round table decided to make the petition to Department of staff policy, education and science of MHC of Ukraine to plan scientific research works on issues about prevention of tobacco smoking and allocation of funds for their fulfillment, to the task group of MHC of Ukraine “Social medicine and health care” about support to plan scientific research works and dissertations on these topics, as well as to send the results from discussion of problems on tobacco smoking and corresponding adopted recommendations within the round table for acquaintance to MHC of Ukraine and other concerned ministries and agencies, WHO headquarters and its Regional office in Europe.

The resolution of forum, among others, contained the recommendations to provide science-based proposals to action plan of MHC of Ukraine in order to implement the State special social program on reduction of harmful influence of tobacco on health of population for the period up to 2012, to continue the practice for annual celebration of international scientific practical conferences and seminars, including the issues on prevention of tobacco smoking among youth and medical workers into their topics, to activate the activity on preparation and publication of scientific, scientific practical, as well as popular editions on problems for struggle against tobacco smoking, to emphasize the experience in solution of urgent problems on struggle against tobacco smoking in periodical scientific journals on public health in Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Russian Federation, Romania, France, Sweden, other European countries and the USA, including East European journal of public health, within the purpose to inform the community on issues of tobacco control to place versatile materials for prevention from tobacco smoking in the internet and to emphasize in mass media.

The results from research were presented during working meeting of representatives from WHO ROE with rector, head at department of social medicine and health care, academician Moskalenko V.F. and during work of the round table, organized by WHO Bureau in Ukraine, WHO ROE, CDC on 28.09.2010.

 

The employees in laboratory on strategic researches in health care together with specialists from other higher medical schools in 2010 performed the study on prevalence of smoking among students at higher medical schools in different regions of Ukraine. The employees of department are the members in many international events and forums, including international conferences “Donozology” (Saint Petersburg, RF, 2005-2010), “Health – basis of human potential” (Saint Petersburg, RF, 2009-2010), conferences and congresses on medical law (Moscow, Vladimir, Ivanovo, RF, 2007-2009).

The department keeps close relations with I.M. Sechenov Moscow medical academy. Academician of NAMS of Ukraine, professor V.F. Moskalenko was a participants in celebrations on occasion of 250th anniversary of establishment and made the report at scientific congress with international participation “Russian medical forum” (20-21.11.2008).

The specialists of department within international cooperation are invited to read lectures in leading scientific and educational establishments in Europe and all over the world.
