History of the department

Bogomolets National Medical University is a successor of the Medical Faculty of the Kiev University of St. Vladimir. At the Medical Faculty of Kiev St. Volodymyr University, the study of ENT organs was conducted selectively in the course of lectures on surgery, therapy and other disciplines.

 

One of the most prominent initiators of otolaryngology in Ukraine was M.M. Volkovich (1858-1928) – an eminent surgeon and otolaryngologist – first began to teach a systematic course in otolaryngology.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The founder of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the 1st Medical Institute was a well-known scientist – O.M. Puchkovsky (1881-1937). Professor, organizer and first head of the department. A historical event for otolaryngology took place in 1921 – it was introduced into the program of medical faculties of universities and medical institutes as a compulsory subject. Sch.M. Puchkivsky ran the department from 1921 to 1937. Scientific interests are extremely broad: scleroma, upper respiratory tuberculosis, ENT oncology, reconstructive surgery, history of otolaryngology; wrote two textbooks of otolaryngology in Ukrainian.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Leonid Hirrenko (1882-1972) Associate Professor, worked in the ENT department from 1911 to 1959. He served as Head of Department in 1938-1939 and in 1943-1944.

Abram Ginsburg (1889-1963) Professor, headed the department from 1939 to 1943, headed the evacuation of the department in 1941, first in Kharkiv and then in Chelyabinsk. Among the surgical interests was the surgical treatment of autumn.

 

 

 

 

 

Yakov Schwartzberg (1886 – 1969) Honored Scientist of the USSR, professor, headed the department from 1944 to 1963, chief specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (1844-1955), revived the activity of the Kiev Scientific ENT – Society, from 1963 to 1969 – consultant of the department. Among his scientific interests were: tonsillary problem, tracheobronchoscopy, scleroma, examination of combat injuries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ivan Kurilin (1918-1984) Honored Scientist of the USSR, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, , professor headed the department from 1963 to 1984, was the chief of the personnel department of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, editor-in-chief of the journal », Chairman of the Republican Scientific Society of Otolaryngologists, author of five monographs, scientific materials covered issues of oncology, scleroma, chronic tonsillitis, otitis and arthritis in children, extraneous esophagus, nasal bleeding, reconstructive restoration efficient innovation infrastructure Surgery upper respiratory tract.

 

 

 

 

Yuri Vladimirovich Mitin (1941). Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor, Head of the Department from 1985 to 2014. He has trained two medical doctors and 21 candidates of medical sciences, has published 610 scientific and methodical works, including 14 monographs, 9 textbooks published in Ukrainian, Russian and English, 11 textbooks, 18 patents. Deputy Chairman of the Republican Scientific Society of Adrenal Laryngology, member of the editorial board of the journals of the Journal of Nose and Throat Diseases and Rhinology. Scientific interests cover the following issues: occupational pathology of ENT organs, acute laryngotracheitis in children, history of otolaryngology, oto- and rhinogenic intracranial complications, diagnosis and treatment of middle and inner ear pathology, emergency ENT care, tonsillary problem, chronic rhinitis, non-radial methods of diagnosis of diseases of the nasal sinuses, endoscopic rhinosurgery

 

 

 

Professor Alexander Naumenko (1965) – Vice-Rector of Bogomolets National Medical University, Honored Doctor of Ukraine. Headed the department from 2014 to 2015.

Since 1995, O.M. Naumenko worked at the University’s Admissions Committee, where he went from a technical secretary to a responsible secretary. Since 1997 he took an active part in the creation and organization first Faculty of Physician Training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where he worked all the time as the Deputy Dean. O.M. Naumenko established close cooperation with the departments and clinics of the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy, where inspections and treatment of servicemen who took part in the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster took place. As a result of the work on examination and treatment of these patients, he at 2002 defended his doctoral dissertation, which resulted in the improvement and improvement of algorithms for the diagnosis and patients treatment with pathology of the nose and paranasal sinuses, both involved in the elimination of the consequences of the Chornobyl catastrophe and Kiev residents. From 2003 О.М. Naumenko holds the position of Assistant Rector of Bogomolets NMU. Professor O.M. Naumenko is actively involved in all university, city events. Professor O.M. Naumenko was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the Mayor of Kyiv and the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Health in 2013. His scientific interests is: pathology of ENT organs, oto- and rhinogenic intracranial complications, diagnosis and treatment ear pathology, emergency ENT care, endoscopic rhinosurgery.

 

 

 

Professor Valery Vasyliev (1939 – 2018) headed the department from 2015 to 2016. Scientific path V.M. Vasyliev is associated with the study and treatment of patients with ozena. Generalization of own research allowed V.M. Vasyliev to substantiate a new theory of the pathogenesis of this disease. This concept formed the basis of the doctoral dissertation of V.M. Vasyliev , the result of more than 40 years of work of a surgeon-otolaryngologist. Professor V.M. Vasyliev developed a new clinical morphological classification of this diseases, modified surgical methods of treatment with the use of new implants. For the first time in the literature, he described and documented video endoscopic conditions of the nasal cavity at different stages of the autumn. VM Vasylievs scientific and practical research is related to the study of various problems of otolaryngology: emergency ENT care, intraocular oto- and rhinogenic complications, inflammatory diseases of ENT organs, scleroma of the upper respiratory tract, rhinoplasty, mycosis of ENT organs. With the direct participation of Professor V.M. Vasyliev has preserved the health and life of tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens, he systematically operated on serious patients, provided routine and urgent assistance for complex ENT pathology. For his conscientious work V.M. Vasyliev was awarded the “Excellent Health of the USSR” badge and the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

 

 

 

Since 2016, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Y. Dieieva (1970). Her scientific interests: pathology of auditory and vestibular analyzers, conservative and surgical treatment of ear diseases. An in-depth study of these problems with the involvement of experiments, the study of the impact of new drugs and methods of surgery are reflected in the doctoral dissertation Y. Dieieva, in 2012. Professor Y. Dieieva performs the whole volume of surgical interventions of the highest category of complexity, consults patients, performs surgical interventions for oto- and rhinogenic intraocular complications, neck phlegmons, etc. Professor Y. Dieieva has many years of experience as a teacher-methodologist, thanks to her methodical support of the educational process of students in the credit-modular system for Ukrainian foreign and English-speaking students. As head of the department, Professor Y. Dieieva always takes an active part in all areas of activity of the department and the university as a whole. Credit to Professor. It is undoubtedly true that the Department of Otorhinolaryngology now holds the status of a leading among medical universities in Ukraine. In 2005, Professor Y. Dieieva was awarded by the Mayor of Kiev, and in 2007 by a Certificate from the Health Ministry of Ukraine.
