History of department
Subdepartment of Internal Medicine №1 of Bogomolets National Medical University is one of the oldest and the most authoritative therapeutic departments in Ukraine, CIS countries, Europe and worldwide. It has existed since 1844 and was one of the first sub departments of Medical Faculty of Kyiv University of St. Vladimir, established in 1841.
Sub department of Intermediate level therapy №1 over 165 years of its history was headed by such prominent and internationally recognized scientists and physicians as V.P. Obraztsov, F.H Yanovsky, M.D. Strazhesko, V.N. Ivanov, H. Yo. Burchynsky. Each of them left mark in the history of national medicine and we are justifiably proud of them.
At appropriate time, latest achievements in medicine were constantly introduced at the subdepartment due to these scientists. Outstanding medical discoveries and announcements were made at the Subdepartment for the first time in the world, Europe, Russia, the Soviet Union or Ukraine at different times. Among the most important are the following:
Development of methodological principles of deep sliding palpation of the abdomen, which now is used worldwide (V.P. Obraztsov, M.D. Strazhesko). The first experience of electrocardiography in the diagnosis of heart disease in pre-revolutionary Russia (V.P. Obraztsov). The first description and explanation of such cardiac phenomena as gallop rhythm, normal third heart sound (V.P. Obraztsov).
The first in the world lifetime diagnosis of myocardial infarction (thrombosis of coronary vessels) and description of its three clinical varieties – anginal, asthmatic and gastric forms (V.P. Obraztsov , M.D. Strazhesko ). Development of the theory of rheumatism, heart failure classification, description of “cannon” tone at full atrio-ventricular blockade, opening of Institute of Clinical Medicine in Kiev (N.D. Strazhesko). Description of diagnostic changes of Traube’s semilunar space in pleurisy, semiotics of lung cancer, clinical findings and prevention of pulmonary tuberculosis (F.G. Yanovsky). Development of classification of gastric cancer and lung cancer, development and introduction of computed tomography scanning into medical practice (V.M. Ivanov). Creation of school of Ukrainian Gastroenterologists, fundamental works on peptic ulcer, textbook “Internal Diseases”, popular in the Soviet times (H. Yo. Burchynsky).
The world’s first work on the establishment of the role of infection H. pylori in the recurrence of duodenal ulcer, the first use of 13C-breath tests in the CIS, capsule Bravo and new immunoenzymometric tests (determination of fecal elastase 1, feces pyruvate kinase, GastroPanel), v ideoendoscopes and Video Capsule Endoscopy in gastroenterology, the first works on the use of testing for food intolerance (V.H Perederiy).
Today the Subdepartment of Internal Medicine № 1 is a close-knit team of doctors, researchers, associates, seeking to constantly improve medical knowledge , implementation of new methods of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of internal organs.
The first works in Ukraine on the role of Helicobacter pylori infection in the development of gastrointestinal tract were performed and published by staff of our subdepartment : Effect of different treatments on Campylobacter pylori (Helicobacter pylori) in patients with peptic ulcer disease (H.M. Popereka ) – thesis submitted for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences -1990 year.
The value of Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer recurrence (Ye.S. Yurchenko) – thesis submitted for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences -1990 year. New diagnostic techniques such as 13C-breath tests, tubeless pH-metry (capsule Bravo), tubeless (Video Capsule) Endoscopy, “GastroPanel” etc. were at the first time introduced in Ukraine in our department.
