INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH GROUP, CONSISTING OF SCIENTISTS FROM O.O. BOGOMOLETS NMU AND RESEARCHERS FROM LEADING UNIVERSITIES IN THE USA, RECEIVED TWO GRANTS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF CONTROL FOR TUBERCULOSIS IN UKRAINE

21.03.2018

On 19, January, 2018 Brown University (USA) sent the notification that the interdisciplinary international research group, consisting of scientists from O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University and researchers from the USA, received the grant from AIDS Research Center (Providence Boston Center for AIDS Research, CFAR).

On 14, March, 2018 Brown University (USA) sent the notification that US RI Foundation also allocated the grant to abovementioned interdisciplinary research group to study the tuberculosis at children in Ukraine.

The research will be devoted to one of the most difficult problems in control for tuberculosis in Ukraine – timely diagnostics of tuberculosis at children. The mathematical modeling testifies to the fact that the significant burden of tuberculosis and double infection of tuberculosis/HIV in Ukraine causes to much more sickness and death rates at children than it is officially registered. General practitioners may provide with the additional confirmation for these calculations as in the cases, when the tuberculosis is registered, the severe and complicated forms of disease are met more and more often that is stipulated by pathomorphism of this pathology in modern conditions. Probably, the overlooked cases of tuberculosis and HIV-infection, progressing, cause to tragic consequences.

The diagnostics of tuberculosis at children is much more complex than at adults, requires the long observation for risk groups and implementation of modern approaches in evidence-based medicine. Unfortunately, the pediatric direction of industry at the background of significant progress in diagnostics of tuberculosis requires the serious reformation. Thus, the purpose of this research is the implementation of efficient system for diagnostics of tuberculosis at children, found on application of special methods, available at present moment.

The project plans the prospective and retrospective cohort observations for contact persons, analysis of pathomorphological material due to results from autopsies at children, died from tuberculosis. NMU in this research will be represented by department of phthisiology and pulmonology at the head with professor Vasyl Petrenko and department of pathological anatomy No 2 at the head of professor Serhii Hychka and assistant professor Petro Kuzyk. The group of scientists from Brown University at the head with professor Timothy Flannigan and Doctor Natasha Rybak, the group from Boston University at the head with professor Robert Horsburg and Ph. D Elen Jenkins will take part as participants from the USA. Professor from Harvard University Megan Murrei and researcher from Texas University Ph. D Woomi Ibana also plan to join to the work. The first meeting for international research group will be held at O.O. Bogomolets NMU at the beginning of April this year.
