SURGEONS OF BOGOMOLETS NATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY WON THE PRIZE OF THE CABINET OF MINISTERS OF UKRAINE

On July 17, 2014, a group of scientists and surgeons from Bogomolets National Medical University were awarded the prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. These are six employees of the Department of Surgery # 3 – Academician Fomin P.D., Professor Shepetko Ye.M., Professor Ivanchov P.V., Associate professor Povch A.A., teaching assistant Kozlov S.M., teaching assistant Peresh Ye.Ye who won the prize for the work “Modern mini-invasive endoscopic and surgical techniques of gastrointestinal bleeding treatment”.

The problem of gastrointestinal bleeding is very complex and it has not been solved unambiguously for decades. There are about 50 thousand patients in Ukraine with this diagnosis every year. About 53% of all bleeding are those arising from gastric or duodenal ulcer, 10% – tumor bleeding and 7.3% emerge from varicosity of the esophagus in liver cirrhosis. In the fight against these diseases during the last 10-15 years the emphasis was on the use of modern innovative technologies – mini-invasive endoscopic and surgical.

In 1982, in Kiev was set up the first in Ukraine Center for gastrointestinal bleeding under the direction of Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Vasyl Bratus. During this time 32.5 thousand patients with various gastrointestinal bleeding underwent treatment in this Center. During this period of time has been also tried and tested methods, lessons has been learned, strategy for the treatment of various gastrointestinal bleeding has been developed, especially – ulcer, gastric cancer and liver cirrhosis with bleeding from esophageal phlebectasis. The number of deaths in Kiev Center of gastrointestinal bleeding has decreased in 4-4.5 times thanks to new method of surgical treatment of acute gastrointestinal bleeding.

The prize of the Cabinet for the development and implementation of innovative technologies was founded in 2012. With all papers submitted for the contest, the five best has been chosen. The work of our scientists was estimated with maximum number of votes in the Expert Council of the Committee on innovative technologies for the first time over the years. Ceremonial presentation of diplomas of laureate was held in the hall of the State Agency on Innovative Technologies at the Cabinet of the Ministers of Ukraine.
