FIRST AID TO GUNSHOT WOUNDED SEMINAR

“Principles of first aid to gunshot wounded, gunshot orthopedic trauma treatment specifics”.
On 13th  of August 2014, “Principles of first aid to gunshot wounded, gunshot orthopedic trauma treatment specifics” scientifically-practical  seminar and master-class took place at Bohomolets National medical university traumatology and orthopaedics department and State institution “Traumatology and orthopaedics institute of Ukraine National academy of medical science” with participation of civil medicine leading experts, military doctors and also representatives of medical service, which participated in ATO
Seminar was opened by Head of Traumatology and orthopaedics department, professor O.A. Buryanov. He underlined the importance of such events for exchange of information and experience and creation of single medical and scientific space for providing help for gunshot wounded, necessity of developing and improvement of existing approaches to providing help to patients of indicated category, emphasized on absence of single approaches to organization of help and coordination between military establishments and civil medical units, marked the difficulties  which medics and paramedics faced every day.
Gunshots and mine wounds specifics, medical sorting principles of injured and wounded, specific of gunshot wounds surgeon treatment. The reports were made by professor Zarutskiy Ya. L., Candidate of Medical Science Yarmoliuk Yu.O., professor Strafun S.S., Candidate of Medical Science Kostiuk A.N. Also the master class on lambs and backbone injures transport immobilization, field and evacuation bleeding stop specific, locomotors apparatus injures bandaging principles (Mazevich V.B.), usage of external fixation apparatus (Kostiuk A.N.) was held.  General issues of providing medical assistance to wounded, necessity of agreement and coordination of cooperation between Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health were raised here in friendly patriotic atmosphere of communication and discussion. Peter Flanigan (Great Britain) – coordinator of medics and paramedics for emergency states training programs and doctor Pustovarov C. (Ukraine) participated in seminar.
Head of Medical department of “Donbas” battalion Yu.V. Marchenko’s report was very meaningful and interesting. The report provoked intensive discussion and interest among attendees. The specific of report was the view of medic and organizer, which participates in providing assistance in ATO by himself on the frontline. The problems which were faced in ATO area, aspects of psychological assistance to injured and medics were discussed.
All attendees, and especially military medics, noted insufficient efforts and means for providing assistance for wounded. Valuable volunteers’ assistance in providing medication and transport was noted. Almost full absence of armed vehicles for injured and wounded evacuation from battlefield shall be emphasized.
Of course, only comprehensive discussion and experience exchange provide the possibility to improve the result of medical professionals’ work. Not only discussions but also active deeds of leadership in relation to medical provision organizing and, most important, forming of united view on providing assistance to gunshot wounded are necessary.
As a result – the resolution was adopted:
1.         Cooperation coordination between medical divisions of Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health within the united system of providing assistance to patients during military actions are necessary.
2.         Additional material and personnel provision of some central and city regional hospitals issues, which are situated nearly ATO area, were reviewed.
3.         To improve material provision of assistance providing to patients with gunshot wounded lambs. First of all due to purchasing of external fixation apparatus and VAC-therapy apparatus.
4.         To develop medical professionals system training of different levels with involving not only native, but also international experts. Wide involving in studying in frames of international programs.
5. International group, involving Britain Paramedics college, National medical university, State institution “Traumatology and orthopaedics institute of Ukraine National academy of medical science”, Military-medical academy and Main Military Clinical Hospital of Ukraine Ministry of Defense experts, was created for training of medical professionals, volunteers, soldiers for providing medical assistance during military actions.
